About DermCare

DermCare is a physician led medical dermatology practice in Mississauga, Ontario. Assessment and treatment are publicly funded through OHIP and patients are seen by referral. The practice provides narrowband UVB phototherapy on site, reads its own dermatopathology in house and takes part in sponsored clinical research.

The practice

DermCare is owned and directed by Dr. Aiza Ejaz, a dermatologist certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, who serves as Medical Director. She practises alongside Dr. Faisal Al-Mohammedi, who is certified in both Dermatology and Anatomical Pathology. Both physicians hold Independent Practice registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario, and their registration can be verified on the College's public register.

The physicians are supported by a clinical team of nursing and phototherapy staff, a referral desk and a research coordination role.

Any statement about when the practice was established, its history or the number of patients seen is to be confirmed with Dr. Ejaz before publication.

What we do

DermCare provides medical dermatology: the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the skin, hair and nails. This includes skin cancer and suspicious lesions, psoriasis, eczema and atopic dermatitis, hidradenitis suppurativa, vitiligo and hair, scalp and nail disorders, among other conditions. See conditions we treat.

Three parts of the service are provided within the practice rather than referred elsewhere.

  • Phototherapy. Narrowband UVB is delivered on site by nursing staff under physician order, for psoriasis, eczema, vitiligo and other photoresponsive conditions. It is covered by OHIP when ordered by a physician for a recognised diagnosis. About phototherapy.
  • Dermatopathology. Skin biopsies are read in house by Dr. Al-Mohammedi, who is certified in anatomical pathology as well as dermatology, so the clinical question and the microscopic findings are considered together.
  • Clinical research. The practice is an investigator site for sponsored dermatology studies. Research at DermCare.

Cosmetic treatments without a medical indication are not covered by OHIP and are not part of the referral based service.

How care is organised

Because the service is OHIP funded, it runs on referral. The sequence is the same for every patient.

Referral

A family physician, nurse practitioner or specialist sends a referral by fax to 905 625 5650. Patients cannot self refer.

Triage

A dermatologist reviews every referral and assigns urgency. Suspected melanoma and rapidly changing lesions are booked ahead of routine cases. Patients are seen by whichever physician is available first for their condition.

Assessment and treatment

The referral desk contacts the patient to book. The visit includes a skin examination, a review of treatments already tried and a plan agreed with the patient, which may include phototherapy, a biopsy, prescription treatment or follow up.

Report back

A written consultation report is sent to the referring physician, and separately to the primary care provider where these differ. Further reports follow when the plan changes.

Full details for referring offices are on the referring physicians page. Information for patients on what to bring and what to expect is on the patient information page.

Research

DermCare takes part in sponsored clinical research as an investigator site. A Phase 2 study in adolescent hidradenitis suppurativa is currently recruiting (NCT07213973). Participation in research is voluntary and separate from standard care; a patient who declines a study receives the same treatment as one who takes part. Physicians at the practice have also contributed to published research in dermatology. See current studies and publications, or contact research@dermcare.ca.
